First off, I just want to say welcome back and I'm so happy to be working for your benefit again. It has been a long road to recovery and cannabis has definitely been there by my side. So without further ado, let's get into the reason you clicked onto this link, properly dosing your edibles with cannabis.

Understanding Cannabis Infusions
There are many medicinal benefits to extracting properties of cannabis. From infusing oils to relieve your epileptic child of a seizure to inducing sleep for insomniacs, cannabis has many faces to show. Cannabis is made up of over 100 compounds known as cannabinoids. The most recognized cannabinoids are THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol). So what's the benefits in smoking cannabis vs. ingesting cannabis? Well, for starters, ingesting cannabis oils are fast acting and last longer because they enter your bloodstream. When you're smoking cannabis, the act of lighting your herbs and inhaling the smoke it produces is the simple form of decarboxylation which releases the psychoactive part of cannabis known as THC. By doing so, it releases THC from THC-A, the non-psychoactive form. Once the smoke containing released THC enters your body, they interact with cannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2, in your body which control physiological processes including appetite, pain-sensation, mood, and memory. [i] CBD on the other hand doesn't interact directly with receptors.
It's super important to start low and go slow. By that I mean, in the beginning stages of your DIY dosing, you need to listen to your body and how it behaves/reacts to the amount of cannabis you've infused in your oil. Start with low amounts of cannabis extractions and only ingest one strain type infusion at a time. Go slow with increasing your dosage and as a rule of thumb, allow 4-6 hours to pass by before you begin testing the effects of an increased dosage. I'd recommend that you ingest your first round of infusions a few hours before bedtime. In this way, you'd be able to sleep off the harsh feeling of overdosing or over-consuming. If you like to start your testing in the day time and fall prey to overdosing, you can counteract the harsh high by drinking ginger tea or ingesting or smoking a strain with the opposite properties, like smoking a CBD dominant strain if your infusion was THC dominant.
If you're like me, then your understanding works best in number form. The numbers for standard daily dosing or per serving of CBD rich strains is 10 mg (1 ml) and for THC rich strains, 1-5 mg (0.2 ml), per 1 cup of coconut oil. In most of my recipes, I use coconut oil because it is the best and easiest oil to absorb. Its also because I'm an island gal at heart and love being reminded of falling from the backyard coconut tree as a child.

Start to finish: 12 hours (activation: 30-60 minutes)
Yields: 100 servings
Approximate dosage: 10 milligrams per serving*
- 1 cup of cold pressed virgin coconut oil
- 7 grams of dry cannabis buds
- Baking pan
- Cheese Cloth (optional)
Preheat oven to 240°F. Place your buds onto the baking pan evenly before placing it in the oven. The decarb process should take 30 minutes for kief and 45-60 minutes for buds and trim.
Once the decarb is done, allow your herbs to sit for a few moments. They should have a light brown crisp to them.
In a crockpot, warm your coconut oil on medium heat with an optimal temperature of 160°F. Place the decarb buds/kief/trim in once this temperature has been reached. Be sure to stir every 2 hours up to 8-12 hours (depending on your desired potency or patience).
Once the process is done, you can do one of two things, place a cheese cloth over the mouth of our mason jar and begin carefully pouring the contents of the Crockpot. Once the plant matter is separated from the oil now in the mason jar, you can set it aside to used in facial masks, smoothies or as seasoning for meats. The other option is to pour all of the Crockpot's content into the mason jar to create a more potent mixture over time.
Balancing the Aroma/Stench
Remember the first time you opened up a jar of dried buds and took a whiff? Do you remember the feeling it gave? The smell of cannabis can create a sweet aroma or a stench, which is caused by its terpenes. What are terpenes? Well, without going to scientific-y, terpenes are aromatic compounds that give cannabis its unique smell, flavour and colour.
The most common terpenes are mycrene, linalool, caryophyllene, pinene, and limonene. By knowing which terpene dominants your strains, allows you to pair it with other herbs and essential oils that match, like a Tinder swipe.
For me, citrus and earthy strains are my go to. Since they don't usually have a skunk'ish smell, my reason for infusing is to create a savory profile to be used in desserts like lemon meringue or raspberry tarts. Adding slices of lemon or orange zest into your jar of coconut oil infusions before it cools off goes well. To create a more potent blend, leave your plant matter in the jar, shaking a few moments before use. For strains that do have skunk'ish smells, balancing their aroma is more important if your making edibles like chocolate which carry the scents of it's ingredients.

Duration of High

Ingesting edibles create highs that last between 6-8 hours which takes effect in the first 30 minutes and peaks at the 2 hour mark. If your ingesting infused oils for therapeutic reasons, place a few droplets up to a teaspoon daily under your tongue and let it sit for 5-10 minutes. This method takes effect the quickest and lasts the longest.
*Note: The amount of coconut cannabis oil specified in this recipe is a loose suggestion based on several tests; should be used as estimate benchmark who's actual amount should be modified based on several factors: your body mass, body effect, and the potency you desire. Dosing can be tricky, so the best way to test for potency is to start low and go slow, testing your body's reaction to dose changes every four to six hours, before making an informed decision on whether to consume more. Always dose carefully and listen to your body, and never drive under the influence of cannabis. If sharing your infusions with others, always inform them of what they are ingesting and the dosage level.
